Is there an age limit to renting a vehicle from Budget?

Yes. It is 21 with a class 5 required. But if you are between the ages of 21 and 25 you are subject to young adult fee. Drivers over 25 years old are not subject to this fee.

What are your Hours of Operation?

Each of our locations has their own hours of operation. Most locations are open every day of the week including holidays, with the exception of Christmas. For more detailed information please contact our reservation department at 780-448-2000 or 1-800-661-7027. Or, you may refer to our website’s Locations section.

How do I know which Budget location is closest to me?

We have 11 convenient locations in and around Edmonton, St. Albert and Sherwood Park. Refer to our website’s Locations section.

Can I return a vehicle before or after business hours?

Yes. Budget does allow over-night drops; however, the renter would be responsible for any damages occurring to the vehicle until we have accepted responsibility for the unit, usually the early the next morning. We have a key drop-off box to leave the keys in. The vehicle would be inspected for damage, checked for fuel, and then the final contract would be printed with the amount still owing being charged to the payment method provided at the time of starting the rental.

Is there a pet policy?

Housebroken pets are invited to travel in your rental car, just as they do in your personal car. Although Budget doesn’t assess an extra fee for pets, pet owners will incur an additional charge for any damage caused by animals, or any special cleaning required as a result of shedding or accidents. If you are travelling with someone that is disabled and requires the use of an animal aide, Budget will waive the cleaning charge as long as any shedding and dirt is not excessive. Please note that Alberta has enacted a Distracted Driving law, and driving with pets, particularly in the front seats, could be considered distractive by traffic authorities.

Can I reserve a non-smoking vehicle?

All vehicles in our fleet are 100% non-smoking. If the vehicle is been returned smelling of smoke, a $75 minimum cleaning charge will be applied to the renter’s credit card.

Am I able to reserve a specific make and model of vehicle?

Generally no, but some exceptions can be made. Most of the time, we at Budget won’t know what you will be driving until the day of your rental. We share our fleet between our 11 locations in-city locations and the Edmonton International Airport; that makes it difficult to determine whether or not we will have a specific make and model at your pickup location. We are always happy to take a request at the time of booking with our reservation department at 780-448-2000 but once again, we cannot guarantee.

Our exceptions are that we do guarantee certain vehicle types at certain times of the year; such as convertibles, and certain specialty vehicles, such as luxury vehicles for weddings.

What happens if I get a traffic ticket?

The driver will be held responsible for any traffic violations or parking tickets that occur during the time of the rental. In the event that Budget receives a speeding on green light camera ticket, red light camera ticket, or photo radar ticket (ie, tickets that are issued without the vehicle being stopped by the authorities and the citation is sent to Budget in the mail), the amount will be charged to the renter’s credit card along with a nominal administration fee. The renter will have the option to dispute the ticket through the courts, but it will be their responsibility to let Budget know within 2 weeks of the charge.

I was involved in an accident with my personal vehicle. How does the process of renting a replacement vehicle work?

Contact a Budget agent @ 780 448-2000.  They will assist with your reservation and help arrange, if applicable, for invoicing to the responsible insurance company, subject to their authorization.  We will require the insurance company name, adjuster, and claim or file number in order to expedite this process. Leave the rest to us!

Can I return my vehicle to a different location than I picked up from?

Yes. We allow you to return your rental vehicle to any of our in-city locations at no additional charge. Leaving the vehicle at the International Airport would result in a $20 charge. As well, you can also travel one-way to other cities in Western Canada. Call 780-448-2000 for pricing and for a list of cities you can drop in.

Does Budget have roadside assistance?

Yes, we do provide 24 hour roadside assistance.

What happens if there isn’t a vehicle available in the class that I reserved under?

Since Budget guarantees their reservations, we promise to provide you something of equal or greater value. Say, for example, you book a mid-size car and when you come to pick it up, we are unable to provide one. If that happens, we would then rent you a full size car at no additional cost to you.

Do you have a lost and found?

Yes we have a local (central Edmonton) lost and found office. If you left something in one of our vehicles after returning, please call 780-448-4745 or 1-800-661-7027 and ask for the lost and found office.

Do you require a deposit to rent a vehicle?

You do not require a deposit when making most car or truck reservations with Budget (except, potentially, for certain specialty vehicles). When picking up the vehicle, in most cases, we would place a hold on the renter’s credit card limit close to the estimated amount of the rental. Depending on the length of the rental, funds may actually be charged to the credit card.

Do you require a credit card to rent a vehicle?

Yes, the driver must have a valid, major credit card and driver’s license in his or her name for us to be able to release the vehicle. Family members and friends cannot use their credit card to rent a vehicle on your behalf.

Will you take any other photo identification instead of a driver’s license?

No. We absolutely need to have a driver’s license to prove that you are eligible in your province, state or country to operate a motor vehicle.

Is my regular driver’s license sufficient when I am renting out of my resident country?

We require that if you are coming from out of country, that you have an international driver’s license along with the license from your home country. (United States citizens excepted)

Can I rent a car to take my driving test?

No. We require the driver of the vehicle to have a valid Class 5 driver’s license (or your provincial, state, or country’s equivalent). Unfortunately, there can be no exceptions to this rule

Do I need a special license to drive any of the bigger Budget Trucks?

No, everything that we have on fleet is drivable by a Class 5 Alberta License (or your provincial, state, or country’s equivalent).

How do I change my existing reservation?

To change any existing reservation, please call 780-448-2000 or 1-800-661-7027 and our Local Edmonton Reservation Department will be able to help you.

Is it cheaper to rent on a certain day of the week, or time of the month?

It very well could be, our rates are constantly changing. We often rent cars out for less on the weekend, and since we get busier during the week the cars become more expensive. Most trucks on the other hand, are normally more expensive on weekends and on dates spanning month-end. The best option is to call and request rates for different days if you have that flexibility. As our vehicles could be busy literally any day of the week, it’s best to enquire and reserve as far in advance as possible.

What is your cancellation policy?

This is a little different for cars and trucks. Cars, we need at least 24 hour notice. There is no penalty for cancelling or modifying a car reservation. For trucks, we require a 48 hour cancellation notice or your $50 deposit (if taken) will be forfeited.

May I extend my rental beyond the original return date?

Yes, all we require is that you call the phone number of the rental location (you can find this on the top of your rental agreement) and let them know how much longer you will need the rental. Please note that this may incur the replacement of amounts held against your credit card to an actual charge

How long am I able to rent a car for?

You can rent a vehicle for as long as you need. We have daily, weekly and monthly rentals and you can also buy and lease vehicles from us as well.

Can I take the vehicle out of the province or out of the country?

We have no issues with the vehicles being driven in the provinces of Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan. However, we impose a minimum number of days if you leave Alberta. For example, to go to Vancouver, it would be a minimum of a 5 day rental. Under no circumstances are our vehicles permitted to enter the Northwest Territories, Yukon, Nunavut, Alaska or,  Mexico. Remember, to enter the United States, US Customs requires all adults to have a passport. Our vehicles can only be driven into the United States with written approval of the location manager PRIOR to your departure and in most cases, only the northern states bordering western Canada are considered.

What happens if my late night flight is late and the Budget rental desk is closed when I get there

Since we maintain a Budget counter at the Edmonton International Airport, we do have access to flight times and whether or not your flight is cancelled or delayed. Upon booking, we do ask for your arrival flight number, just for this reason. If possible, giving us a call to let us know that you will be late is ideal and will give you peace of mind that we will be at our counter waiting for you.

What if I don’t return my car on the designated return day?

Our rental days are based on a 24 hour clock. (If you picked up the vehicle at 8 am, a one rental day would be 24 hours later at 8 am). If you return later than your scheduled time, you may be subject to an hourly charge and daily charge if you return a later day (based on a 24 hour rental day). Please make sure to notify your Budget location that you will be returning late, as soon as possible to avoid potential additional charges and inconvenience.

What types of payment does Budget Edmonton accept?

To rent a vehicle, we will always require a credit card in their own name. We accept; Visa, MasterCard and American Express. Once the vehicle has been returned, we will finalize the amounts due, reduced by any deposit. At this time, you may change to another method of payment, if you prefer. We do not accept any pre-paid credit cards or travelers cheques, and do not accept cash as a deposit method

How much fuel do I need to have in the tank when returning a vehicle?

Budget will provide you your rental vehicle completely filled with fuel. Most renters return the vehicle with a full tank, as well as provide us the receipt to show that you have recently purchased fuel nearby. Another option is to pre-purchase a tank of fuel at the start of the rental, which allows you to return the vehicle with as little fuel as you feel comfortable with. If the vehicle is returned at the end of the rental and you have not done either of the above, we will charge a refuelling fee that will include our costs to refuel the vehicle.

Do you deliver vehicles?

Currently, Budget does not deliver vehicles. We do have a customer shuttle service that can come and pick you up at your home, place of business, or car repair facility and bring you to our offices. As you might expect, this service is offered during our hours of operation.

Do you have GPS units?

We do rent out the Garmin Navigation System. We strongly recommend that this be an added option if you are unfamiliar with the city of Edmonton.

How can I get a copy of my receipt?

Simply fill out our Get a Receipt form for an electronic receipt.

Or alternatively, you can contact the location you rented from. They will be able to send you a copy by mail, or fax.

Where can I get an offer code, corporate account, or coupon?

Absolutely, it is. We pride ourselves on the fact that customers that reserve with us will ALWAYS receive a rental vehicle (subject to driver and credit approvals).
