2013 will mark a major milestone for Budget Car and Truck Rental of Edmonton as we celebrate our 50th year in operation.
Growing up in Calgary, founder, Lionel Groberman assisted his father in the family furniture store where he worked as a helper on the delivery truck. After earning a Commerce degree from the University of British Columbia he returned to the family business and worked in mutual funds for a few years. In July of 1963 Lionel opened his first Budget Edmonton location in what is now the Telus Towers.
The early years were not easy and required the dedication, and the steady work ethic he learned on from the family business. He started with a dozen vehicles and one wash bay attendant. Since 1963, Budget Edmonton has grown to have locations in 12 cities across Northern Alberta and Saskatchewan. Those dozen or so vehicles that Lionel started off with has transformed into a fleet of over 4,000 vehicles in 2013. We can honestly say we have one of the largest and most diverse fleet of vehicles in Northern Alberta.
And to commemorate 50 years, check out our new logo:

At the beginning of the month, the Avis Budget Group announced that they will be purchasing Zip Car, the world’s largest car sharing company, for a cool $491 million. Avis Budget wants to attract new types of customers and so by purchasing Zip Car, they believe that they will be able to achieve this. A spokesman for the company told the public that by combining the two companies, they will be able to save around $50-$70 million a year.
For people who aren’t familiar with Zip Car here is some background information about the company. The company was founded in 2000 and has become the largest car sharing company and operates all over the world. Zip Car parks some of their vehicles on college campuses as well as large metropolitan areas. Zip Car members have access to a variety of different vehicles and are able to rent on an hourly basis without having to wait.

It started about 5 years ago with twenty-five year veteran Rod Stevens at the helm. They now have eight employees and around eight hundred vehicles on rent. Although trucks provide the bulk of their rentals, Projects Manager Josh Hill said that the team takes pride in being a full service operation that can provide their customers with virtually anything.
They service a variety of markets including Oil and Gas Exploration, Industrial, Government, Couriers, Film production, the Military, Environmental, and Engineering. Five of the top ten construction companies in Canada are clients. They are flourishing in a very competitive market and are looking forward to expanding their current operation. I caught up with a few Projects team members on Friday.
Trisha Attwood brings a wealth of customer service experience to the team including five years with WestJet. She has a great rapport with her clients and services some large oilfield accounts. She has two beautiful daughters and a penchant for classic custom cars. She’s pretty hard to catch up with and I conducted this interview through the window of her truck. Shawn “Bubba” Jodoin is prototype, good old boy and a tremendous asset to the team. He drives, inspects, cleans delivers and does practically everything else asked of him. His hobbies include woodcarving and black powder shooting. (What would you expect from a guy called Bubba?) He and his wife are snowbirds and spend a good part of the winter down in Yuma Arizona.
Alexandra Hanea just recently joined the team and she spends a good deal of her time searching out new accounts. She’s brought energy and enthusiasm with her and is really enjoying her new posting. She loves the fast pace and making spur of the moment decisions.
Krystal McLeod takes care of the office duties with quiet professional efficiency. Krystal said that she enjoys the variety of experiences and the camaraderie that her colleagues provide. Other valuable members of the Projects team, not pictured … they are the one’s doing the actual work, include Michael Ange who is primarily responsible for recruiting new customers; as well as Projects newest addition Helena Charney who works alongside of Shawn delivering and picking up vehicle.”
The projects team is a great bunch to hang out with for a while if you can keep up with the pace.
Sheldon, Lloyd, Bruce and Morris await the start of their afternoon shift. They are part of a 26 member team that is on duty 7 days a week, 364 days per year. Mike Rebus started the program back in 1999. He ran an ad and hired 4 drivers. He hasn’t had to run one since. As the baby boomers retire there has been an abundance of applications from people who had successful careers and were looking for something new. They have proven to be a dependable and efficient group. When I interviewed these 4 drivers there was a commonality in what they said. They all liked the fellowship of their fellow drivers and the flexibility that the job provides. I agree. I work with them every day and they are a great bunch of guys. We are a pretty mature group with the average age being a little over 60 and a lot less than 100.
Said El Jirari and Paul Dhaliwal supervise the program. They try to provide each DA with a shift that is congruent with his wishes. We appreciate their efforts. There are some challenges in effectively meeting the distribution needs of a company like ours. However, we work at improving every day and the veterans are great about taking new guys under their wings. It is a great job and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Neither would the 4 handsome guys pictured in the article.
Oh! Sorry Mike. I really meant to say 5! Mike is always looking for new applicants. Among the requirements are a clean driving record, good safe driving skills and the ability to work as an effective team member. If you know someone with these qualities and who might be interested, have them give Mike a call at 780-488-2077.
